The Magees: March Madness

The “big dance” is upon us, and nobody is more excited about Tar Heel basketball than Anne Louise Harris Magee aka “The #1 Fan.” She has learned the players’ names {at least several of the starters} and makes us “play Tar Heels,” which involves tossing a blow up ball around the house while we pretend to be a specific player. And to say she was devastated when the Heels lost the ACC Tournament (picture at left taken at the end of the game) is an understatement. But AL doesn’t just pretend Tar Heels . . . or just watch them . . . she prays for them. Literally. When Henson hurt his wrist during the ACC Tournament, she prayed for three nights straight for him. As soon as Henson got better, Kendall Marshall hurt his wrist . . . bad. I wish I had a picture of the look on Anne Louise’s face when I told her Monday morning. She actually stopped in her tracks and said, “We need to pray for him Mama.” And we did. Right there in the kitchen, waffles in hand and eyes closed.

So it should come as no surprise that I caught her singing the other night {when she should’ve been asleep} a special version of “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.” I tried to record it without her knowing I was listening, so there isn’t anything to see on the first two videos . . . just something to hear. Turn up your volume, because it couldn’t be any sweeter.*

*for those of you ~~living under a rock~~ that are not Tar Heel fans, the main players that Weezy knows are Henson, Tyler Zeller {aka “Zeller”}, Harrison Barnes {whom she calls by his whole name}, and Kendall Marshall. Whenever we “play Tar Heels,” these are the players we get to choose from . . or that Anne Louise chooses from, since she usually assigns the players. Anyway, back to the video. You won’t see anything but black on the first two videos (they are similar but different), so crank up your volume:

The next morning I had her do a repeat performance. Definitely easier to understand . . . and make no mistake, the enthusiasm is real. Very real. {Note: you can turn your volume back down for these videos . . . back down a lot. Smile }

Yes, my friends, March Madness is in full effect in the Magee house. Even Spencer is in on it, proudly wearing her cheerleader outfit throughout the neighborhood on a “parade” before the big game on Sunday (AL settled for a “Carolina blue” tshirt). How cute is Spencer {when she’s not shoving cheerios in her mouth} with her “big buddy” Barrett (of “Triplet Will-Ba” fame, and who is the one who actually gave Spencer the cheerleader outfit)!!
